Building Power for Our Families

As a broad-based organization, by definition, UPAS tackles multiple issues, including but not limited to issues of educational equity and school choice. UPAS understands that lower income Americans experience the many facets of poverty simultaneously: substandard and yet unaffordable housing, lack of access to healthcare, long working hours, and low wages.

CURRENT UPAS CAMPAIGNS

Food Justice

UPAS believes everyone, regardless of zip code or income level, should have access to fresh, quality food. We are dedicated to advocating for equitable food distribution networks, ensuring fair and affordable pricing, and promoting fresh high-quality food in local supermarkets.

Guaranteed Basic Income

Part of UPAS’ work is to fight back against systems of oppression, one of those systems being poverty. Poverty is an active policy choice that our systems of government actively make every day. We have tools and resources to combat poverty in the United States, yet our systems actively support it. Guaranteed Basic Income is a concept in which low-income families or individuals receive direct cash payments from local, state, or federal governments. We believe GBI is one of the most innovative policies in combating poverty.

Digital Equity

Our campaign for Digital Equity came about due to our realization that access to the internet is vital for a full and happy life, coupled with the knowledge that prices for internet plans are too high for many of our community members to afford. We are working to make sure the internet is accessible and affordable for everyone. We are collaborating with Digital Equity Los Angeles to push for policy reform that increases internet service providers’ accountability so they will provide better service and fair prices.
